The movie, set in the 1930’s, starts on a deserted island which acts as a hideout for the famous war-veteran turned bounty hunter ace pilot known as porco rosso (scarlet pig) who, we soon learn, From the opening scene to ending, this movie is all about direction, direction and direction. Like Totoro, Porco Rosso falls in the latter category. And then there are some where the direction almost completely overshadows the plot-line. Miyazaki movies can broadly fall in 2 or 3 categories some of them are driven by their uncanny and bizarre plot (princess mononoke, spirited away etc). With Fio's improvements, Porco Rosso prepares to challenge Donald officially and regain his honor. is the 17-year-old Fio Piccolo, who hungers for a chance to prove herself. There, he is surprised to find that the chief engineer of Piccolo S.P.A. airplane company and takes out a massive loan in order to repair and improve his fighter plane. Not wanting to disappoint Gina, Porco Rosso flees to the famous Piccolo S.P.A. Thrilled at the possibility of fame, Donald boldly declares that the flying pig is dead. One day, while traveling to fix his faulty engine, Porco Rosso is gunned down by a young American hotshot named Donald Curtis.
He whiles away his days on a secluded island, rarely leaving other than to collect bounties or to visit the beautiful Gina, a songstress and owner of the Hotel Adriano.
Tokiko Kato's original singing voice for Gina is retained in the JAL dub.After a curse turned him into a pig, World War I ace Marco Pagot becomes Porco Rosso, a mysterious bounty hunter who takes down sky pirates in the Adriatic Sea.The film was later redubbed in 2004 by Disney, featuring Michael Keaton as Porco Rosso, and was first released on DVD on February 22, 2005. The dub itself is much more hokey and humorous in delivery than the later Disney dub.
Most of the cast is unknown, though several minor characters are known to have been voiced by Barry Gjerde as indicated on his now-defunct personal website. This dub is extremely rare and was only included in the Ghibli LD Box Set (English on the right analog track) and on the first Region 2 DVD releases in 2002 as a second language option. Porco Rosso was originally dubbed by an unknown company in Tokyo for Japan Airlines.
